악마의 탑 위의 은하수 (The Milky Way Over Devil's Tower)

  옛날에는 악마의 탑이 활화산 이였을까요? 영화 미지와의 조우(Close Encounters of The Third Kind) 의 배경으로도 나왔던 악마의 탑은 미국의 와이오밍에 위치하여 있으며 아직도 이 악마의 탑이 어떻게 생겼는지 의견이 분분합니다. 가장 유력한 가설로는 이 악마의 탑이 단단한 마그마 덩어리가 굳어져 생긴 기둥이라는 것입니다. 이전의 용암 기둥을 덮고 있었던 가벼운 암속들은 모두 풍화되어 사라지고 남은 단단한 용암 기둥만이 남아 위 처럼 된 것이라 합니다. 악마의 기둥 위에는 은하수가 하늘을 가로 지르고 있습니다. 위 사진에서 몇몇의 눈에 띄는 천체들을 발견 할 수 있는데, 예를 들자면 파이프 성운(Pipe nebula)의 암흑 띠라 던지, 악마의 탑 오른쪽의 붉은 빛을 띄는 석호 성운(Lagoon nebula) 가 있습니다. 사진 앞쪽에는 잔디들과 나무들이 줄을 지었는데 그 뒤로 악마의 탑 왼쪽에 달빛이 구름 사이로 비치는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 다른 여러 유명한 유산들과는 달리 이 악마의 탑을 등반하는 것은 허가 되어 있다고 합니다.

The lighter rock that once surrounded the dense volcanic neck has now eroded away, leaving the dramatic tower. High above, the central band of the Milky Way galaxy arches across the sky. Many notable sky objects are visible, including dark strands of the Pipe Nebula and the reddish Lagoon Nebula to the tower's right. Green grass and trees line the foreground, while moon-illuminated clouds appear near the horizon to the tower's left. Unlike many other international landmarks, mountaineers are permitted to climb Devil's Tower.
